Description
With the fruit solely from our original 1973 vines, this 2013 Old Vine Shiraz shows superb colour with peppery intense fruit well integrated with oak. Extended barrel maturation and minimal filtration gives complexity which will ensure that while drinking well now, it will continue to develop for many years.
Tasting Notes
At seven years of age, the colour is amazing. It’s bright plum red with no browning at the edges and it coats the glass. The nose is classic young Peel Shiraz. There’s the tell-tale chalk sitting in deep red cherry-berry fruits and with a substantial oak factor in the background. But the overall sensation is of youthfulness. The palate rolls out like a fine Persian carpet. Silky, smooth, deeply patterned in its fruit complexity and with the oak a lot more integrated than the bouquet suggests. This is a triumph of a mature vineyard and a winemaking team that understands it. Great drinking now, it will be much better in five years and who knows what promise beyond that. While the Peel limestone provides that perfect fruit profile, it also demands time for all its glories to unfold.
